OLYMPISM
Olympism is a philosophy set forth by the Olympic Charter that holds all to a higher standard of treatment, creates common ideals, and a subculture guided by core values of excellence, respect, and friendship. Olympism seeks to break down barriers of discrimination and social and cultural differences and create a common global understanding for human treatment and dignity. The International Olympic Committee, National Olympic Committee, and World Olympic Association are all organizations that adhere to the principles of Olympism.
The WOA and their motto, “Once an Olympian, Always an Olympian” is a great motto. This really brings a familial atmosphere to those involved. The WOA has a goal of getting Olympians together in national associations and unite them all into a Global Forum. This type of meeting and unity will create a collective Olympic culture that can spread to each individual country and essentially globalize the ideas that are emphasized with Olympism. The WOA’s Champion’s in the Street is an example of those fundamentals being put to practice. The fostering of the acceptance of differences, supporting of human rights and diversity, and uniting these Olympians puts everyone on an equal non-oppressive platform to promote peace and society and adheres to the principles of Olympism listed in the Olympic Charter.
The NOC ensures the observance of the Olympic Charter in their country. This is the immediate oversight for each nation to ensure the fundamentals of Olympism are being administered. This organization remains fully autonomous and independent from political and religious affiliations.
